Visiting Kodaiji Temple, Kyoto

Posted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 13 February 2007 in People & Portrait.

This is a temple in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. Don't have a lot to say about the picture... liked the silhouettes and the red and the glare from outside, but not sure if the glare is too much?

Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future.

I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

Petros from Greece

the glare is also very good, I like that contrast as it makes you focus on the siluetes which are very mystirious and on the read. The glare I think makes good work for the rest

Chris Sullivan from Melbourne, Australia

They way you've controlled the glare is very good, the subtle processing also makes for an interesting shot Well done!

@Chris Sullivan: Thanks very much Chris. More luck than judgement...

Stu from Kyoto, Japan

A difficult shot to get right but this looks good. I like how they are both looking at something off-frame. Adds an element of intrigue to the scene.

Fortunately, the glare (and the way it hits off the man's eyeglasses) is what makes this picture. Just for fun I downloaded it and took a look at the histogram. All data is crowded to the extra black and extreme white, with the midtone info being pretty much completely bare. With an orange or yellow filter, it makes an absolutely fantastic B&W photo, taking full advantage of the stark contrast between the outside light and the silhouetted men. A splendid shot just as it is.

@Mike Cash: Thanks Mike. Interesting notes. I'm not very technical I'm afraid... but I shall have a fiddle around with the pic based on what you've said. A friend told me you learn a hell of a lot posting here and it's quite true. As well as a visual education from seeing the images people post, the technical terms and techniques that get mentioned inspire you to find out more...

Prem from Mumbai, India

A nice thriller movie wallpaper. The silhouettes, the looks, the red & the grills above. A little more glare or glow would have brought dramatic efforts. Nice capture.

Excellent shot. I love the way their heads lead us to look at the colourful part of the photo.
