Semi!

Posted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 31 July 2007 in Animal & Insect.

Its that time of year again; these little guys are everywhere.

(semi is Japanese for cicada)

Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future.

I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

Damon Schreiber from Toronto, Canada

Speaking of wicked... I really like it - great detail. I think in the next one, you need a familiar object to provide a sense of scale. These guys are huge, like flying cigars.

31 Jul 2007 4:08pm

@Damon Schreiber: Yeah, sure I'll get a chance to take more shots over the summer hols!

Chus from Combarro, Spain

Are they bothering you? Let me know and I'll send my beatle warrior I shot today to liquidate them :-)

31 Jul 2007 6:08pm

@Chus: Er... thanks Chus. But they're not bothering me. They're sweet.

Dawn Sutherland from Phoenix, United States

I have never seen anything like that in my life, whoa, how big are they?

1 Aug 2007 12:12am

@Dawn Sutherland: They can be as big as a small old man's hand. Don't you get cicadas in the U.S.? Thought they were everywhere? Maybe too dry in Phoenix?

Alfredo J. Martiz J. from Tokyo, Japan

Oh my god you managed to capture the semi, excellent photo Daroru!
I only have a photo of a semi that died, so I decided to try to make photos of them and 2 days ago when I was going to the university I tried to make some photos of semis and one of them attacked me, I believe he was some sort of Kamikaze Semi, really aggressive fellow, he went straight to my right eye, coming from the side, so I could only receive the impact; I was only getting ready for making the photos and as a result of the attack I could not make photos, haha, =)

2 Aug 2007 2:24am

@Alfredo J. Martiz J.: I have never heard of an aggressive semi Alfredo! Take care...

Nick from Dordrecht, Netherlands
