The New Neighbour

Posted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 1 October 2007 in Animal & Insect.

Came home from work the other night to find this guy on the wall outside my apartment. Anyone know what kind of spider this is?

Obviously not a macro, just zoomed from as close as I dared get... (which was pretty far away, actually).

It's different to this Japanese spider....http://stuartgibson.aminus3.com/image/2007-09-27.html

Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future.

I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

I'm sorry, i don't know exactly what it is but it sure looks like a BIG hunting spider. Perhaps it is a ashidaka-gumo? You can see here. Eurgh

@Helen: Ashidaka-gumo - I reckon that's it! Thanks Helen!

Amir from ?, United States

Oh I hate spiders and this one is a creepy little one, but you have done a good job getting to focus.

@Amir: Little! He was pretty big Amir (at least for someone from England)...

Wolfgang Prigge from Canada

SPunkt from -, Germany

How did you enter your flat? Did you fix it with your eyes as I would have done? It is really big … :/

4 Oct 2007 7:11pm

@SPunkt: Thanks SPunkt. Yeah, I stuck very closely to the other wall...

Manuela Photography from Hainburg, Germany

Geee... look at the hair! Well caught. Is it still there?

5 Oct 2007 8:35am

@Manuela Photography: Yes I'm sure... lurking somewhere....

Bron from Canberra, Australia

I think this is a variety of what we'd call a huntsman spider Daroru - if it is it's pretty harmless although large. We like them here they live in our house and eat the flies that stray in :)) (see tomorrow for my latest spider pic!)

@Bron: That's what it is Bron... harmless enough but I still don't want to get too close!
