Dogo Onsen, MatsuyamaPosted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 28 February 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture. This is a very famous hot spring (onsen) bath house, well known across Japan. As you can see it was very busy so we didn't go inside, instead we went to another onsen at a nearby hotel. Its a beautiful old building, although I was surprised how small it was - I was expecting it to look more like the bath house in the animated movie Spirited Away, the design of which was based on this place. I guess I should have known it wouldn't look quite the same... http://worshipandthearts.blogspot.com/2007/06/shinto-and-liminality-in-anime.html Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future. I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaI am totally enraptured of the top of this gorgeous architecture with the reddish glow in the window as well the two layers on top of the sign, they're magnificent with the slight glimpse of almost goldenpink...never seen that shade before :) 28 Feb 2008 11:16am @Lorraine: Thanks Lorraine. It did look mysterious and magical... vu@granby - Wolfgang Prigge from Granby, QC, CanadaVery nice composition that highlights the architecture and the crowds. 28 Feb 2008 1:52pm @vu@granby - Wolfgang Prigge: Thanks Wolfgang! @Will: Thanks Will! Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanThe upper part, the roofs, looks like a small masterpiece! Very beautiful visually! The movie is one of my favourites and while the exterior might havee been inspired somehow by this building, the interior (in the movie) was inspired by "Gajoen" in Tokyo. ( An experience which I recommend to you if you have the chance to visit Tokyo in the future.) 1 Mar 2008 2:06am @Japanalia: Thanks Gabriela. I'd never heard of Gajoen before... will do some research! @Twelvebit: It is. Thanks Twelvebit. |
