Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future. I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

It's good to encourage kids to care about food! @Twelvebit: Yes! Based on your previous postings, do you think this would have been an acceptable kind of shot back home...? Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesI'm not sure exactly what the context is here. If this was a television set, yeah, I'd take a photo if I was around the set. If this was in a public school and one of the kids was my kid I'd take the shot (though if it was a public school and I didn't have kids there, just being there would get one into trouble and having a camera would just add to your problems). If this was in a public location, like a shopping mall, I'd not only keep my camera in the bag, I'd make sure I didn't look too closely or hang around for more than a minute or so --no way I'd take a photo. If you did, and got hassled, and confronted by parents or a cop, there would be no way to explain to their satisfaction why you'd want a photo of kids you don't know (ignorance rules here) --and they'd assume you were a pervert. You could even get arrested, although there is no crime you could be convicted of (on the other hand, you never know, since the cops in this country make up false charges all the time when they don't like you or your attitude). 15 Aug 2008 6:31pm @Twelvebit: This is a cooking school in a shopping mall. The parents were sitting in a line outside, just behind me, waiting for the lesson to finish. It's all open and floor-to-ceiling windows so very public. No-one batted an eyelid when I took the photo! I was with my wife, don't know if that means anything... GJC from Kyoto, JapanI really like the bright colors and the pleasant feel to this one. 16 Aug 2008 10:55am @GJC: Thanks GJC! Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesThe only way I'd chance a shot like that would be in the company of my wife, but I don't want to overstate things. You might well be able to take the shot and not have any problems; and that might be true 80-90% of the time, but given the potential consequences if you do have a problem (ranging from harassment and humiliation to confiscation of your equipment and arrest), and the fact that the general public --including the cops-- won't understand the photographic interest behind taking such a shot, I just don't think it's worth the risk. 16 Aug 2008 3:46pm @Twelvebit: Such a shame... |
