Adashino Nenbutsu-ji 5Posted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 20 January 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. Arashiyama, Kyoto. A former burial place, the grounds of this temple contain thousands of stone statues commemorating the dead, collected from the local area in the early 1900s. The statuettes are actually statues of Buddha that have been eroded over hundreds of years. Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future. I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomAre the stones carved from one piece of rock each, or balanced stones, one atop the other. They are really fascinating to a rock & stone lover like me. 20 Jan 2009 11:32pm @Richard_Irwin: Thanks Richard. The big ones around the edge? Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanThis is one kind of place I like in Japan.....the stone (under whatever form) finds such a good company in nature. At one moment you even get the feeling that they spring from the earth, like as many "children of the earth"! A shot that gives meaning to a winter day! 28 Jan 2009 5:38am @Japanalia: Thanks Gabriela! akarui from Kagoshima, JapanThere is a nice balance in this picture with the differents stones or statues, lines and trees. 30 Jan 2009 2:02am @akarui: Thank you Olivier! |
