Ebisu Shrine, New Year's Day 5Posted by Daryl Johnson (Farnham, United Kingdom) on 8 March 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. The fukuzasa (lucky bamboo branches) are also sold by fukumusume, "fortune women", who are specially chosen for this festival. Although I'm now in England, this blog will still feature photos from Japan for the foreseeable future. I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomI think her outfit is lovely, the crop in the shot draws us into the intimacy of the scene. 8 Mar 2009 10:35am @Richard_Irwin: Thanks Richard! Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaWhat feeling, it's mysterious yet very elegant, I like it very much :) 8 Mar 2009 11:52am @Lorraine: Cheers Lorraine! @kerfendal: Cheers kerfendal! @Laurie: Thanks Laurie! Ilan from IsraelThis is a great frame, very nicely done. 8 Mar 2009 4:23pm @Ilan: Thank you Ilan! @Alun Lambert: Thanks Alun! Steve Rice from Olympia, United StatesThanks Daryl. I got a picture of one of these fukumusume at the Ebisu Festival in Hiroshima but had no idea what they were called. Actually, I walked by the shrine one morning, on the way to work, and saw two young women being inducted in a ceremony. I later saw one in full regalia at the festival. I appreciate your wealth of knowledge. 9 Mar 2009 1:57am @Steve Rice: Ha ha! Thanks Steve - but you should really be thanking Google! Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesThis might have bad connotations over here --though without the face being covered I guess it's ok. 9 Mar 2009 3:22am @Twelvebit: Really? Again, I just innocently snap away... |
