New Year Omikuji

Posted by
Daryl Johnson (Worcester Park, United Kingdom) on 12 January 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Taken at Yakuoji Temple, Hiwasa. Omikuji are small pieces of paper with a fortune written on them. If people receive a bad fortune, they tie them onto nearby pine trees (although... that doesn't look much like a pine to me. Maybe any tree will do in a pinch).

I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

That's a lot of misfortune. A very interesting photo, though. Thanks for sharing.

@Jeff: Thanks Jeff. I guess considering the amount of people there it's not a bad average for the omikuji though!

Such an interesting shot - it's as if the tree is wrapped in bandages! :)

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

I thought it started taking the shape of a heart,'s deviating! We did the same at the shrine in Yokohama, but there were specially allocated places and people were paying attention!Poor tree!
But you took quite a shot of it!

@Japanalia: Thank you Gabriela!

Twelvebit from Victoria, United States

Of course, it sort of begs the question: what is misfortune? I know people here who pray for a good parking spot, and for whom it would be a misfortune to walk an extra 300 feet into the store.

@Twelvebit: Don't know... there are different levels of luck apparently. Not an expert there... but its nice to know you can just tie your bad luck to a tree and walk away from it!
