@Twelvebit: Maybe that's a British English thing..? 'Closed down' means out-of-business, gone, finished for good. 'Closed up' is what happens to a store at the end of each day. You guys don't use 'closed up'?

Actually, I use "closed up" myself, but I don't think the terms are used here with the precision you suggest. I was ruminating on the way we use words in English and how something can be both closed up and closed down.
