Sunamushi Onsen, Ibusuki

Gabriela - you wouldn't like this...!

So - what's going on in this photo then...? This is what Ibusuki is famous for: hot sand baths (sunamushi onsen). You get buried in the hot volcanic sand, which has a sauna-like effect and is supposed to be very beneficial for your health. The recommendation is that you stay buried for 10 to 15 minutes maximum; my wife only informed me of this after I nearly fainted after taking my bath, having been buried for about 25 minutes.

Also - apparently the view when you visit the baths isn't always that of a cattle shed. This was a temporary enclosure, as the usual beach-side onsen area was being renovated.

I found a very good account of visiting the sunamushi onsen here: http://notesofnomads.com/ibusuki-sand-baths/

I apologise in advance if I'm tardy with commenting on your blogs or returning comments during the week... I will get to you though!

The stuff of nightmares here . . I sure hope they do background checks on the guys with the shovels.

@Ronnie 2¢: They were really friendly Ronnie, they just laughed the whole time. Just laughed and laughed...

Richard Standley from Carquefou, France

Quite impressive! At first I thought they went through the "Guillotine"...

@Richard Standley: I understand the assumption Richard...

Your wife was seeing how tough you are. ;-) A very interesting shot and description.

@Steve Rice: Cheers Steve!

You're quite right! I don't like it! I don't like sauna, it's too hot for me and my body rebels at heat! Even dipping into an onsen pool is not always easy, I have to check them first and find one with acceptable temperature. I like the jacuzzi-style, that one I can enjoy!
I wouldn't get under that sand even if I were given one million yen!
I see you were a HERO!

@Japanalia: It was interesting Gabriela... but I really over-did it and nearly fainted afterwards. I couldn't cool down the whole night! Probably quite dangerous...
